Am I the only one who thinks it is a good idea to keep recent physical pictures of family members in my wallet to show people? It’s come up at least one dozen times that I am mentioning one of my daughters, say, and like to show a physical copy picture of them. Sometimes my phone has a dead battery and I commonly don’t carry it with me everywhere I go. We have yet to get to the implications of downed electricity and Internet, when these devices that many of us have become so reliant on all would quickly turn into rubbish.
I decided to look through some of my old photo albums, mostly from developed pictures from the time before smartphones and social media. I’ve decided to digitize some of these here on substack and for those who read my personal musings perhaps you can put a few faces to names. I hope you enjoy
Me and Nemo
This is from Gulfport, Mississippi, in December of 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Although New Orleans got all of the attention the supposed storm surge along the Mississippi Gulf was like a nuclear bomb had gone off. Those photos are WONDERFUL!!!
I have a few boxes myself, it's nice when you can pick up each photo, turn it over....I came along quite late in my family, (my siblings are 9, 10 and 11 years older than I am) so there's a bunch of older pictures and then a bunch of the new baby (me) growing up. I feel like I can ween it all down to a few dozen photos, as I try and imagine becoming highly portable in the near future. I remember how some native folks refuse pictures because they said it would steal your soul....well, maybe, but what we're doing now to people seems like the real soul stealing, literally from within the body. If we only knew what was coming, eh?
