Apparently they stopped tracking the Covid jab doses administered in May for the United States. Curiously when I was looking into hospitals where Ka could get the Covid jab, hypothetically, I went to Bangkok Hospital’s main website and navigated to vaccine packages and…nothing. I could buy him a flu vaccine, a special senior flu vaccine, a rabies vaccine, a dengue fever vaccine and a few other ones for travel (eg malaria/yellow fever). Nowhere on their vaccine packages did they even mention Covid boosters. Funny that.
It’s that time of year again, where I get to listen to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You” in at least four different places across 15 time zones. Here’s hoping my husband can hold down the fort while I’m away.
I don’t have a television and almost never watch movies, but I make an exception during international flights if I’m in the right mood. I’m random about it and couldn’t have picked two movies which were more polar opposite: One, called “Mad Fate,” was a film noir set in always raining and dark Hong Kong, about a fortune teller and a man who is destined to become a serial killer (meanwhile a real serial killer is on the loose). I had to watch with subtitles from the Cantonese but I’d highly recommend it: the twisted descent of both of the main characters into madness was sometimes frustrating, but it certainly kept my attention. I laughed at the beginning and cried at the end.
The other movie I chose to watch was Barbie. I found the beginning of it so disturbing with the breaking of all of the babies that I had to turn it off. I suppose if you can waddle through the first 20 or 30 minutes of plastic jokes it has its moments. But other than fleshing out a rough outline of how we got here with a systemic breakdown of women into sex objects over being mothers, it’s a little short on what to do about it. Maybe if you lived in Venice Beach and want to see what the filming looks like it might be okay! I have no idea how that was the biggest blockbuster film of 2023. I guess it doesn’t take much anymore?
That is my yearly movie review, from what I’m pretty sure are the only two movies I have watched in all of 2023. I suppose my husband had some Thai movies on at the hotel in Bangkok, but they weren’t subtitled and I was mostly tuning them out, so they don’t really count.
Have you seen any good movies? Or bad ones, for that matter? What would you recommend?
And greetings from Hong Kong. I had to snap a quick shot before I left this morning. Until next time…
When Barbie came out our local Regal Cinema had 5 theaters blocked for that stupid film & all were filled. My mom & I were there to see Sound of Freedom. We were 2 of 5 people there to see that much more important film.
Adorable picture of you two and great memes, Amy!
