The Ethical Skeptic comprised a chart of deaths in the USA from Suicide, addiction, and despair. It seems that something happened in 2020 which drove people over the edge and continues to do so:
A picture of me with my Dad, Gret Aunt Suzie and Grandma in 2012. I was about four months pregnant here. May they all rest in peace:
On my poll there is a bit of a back story. When I was 8 or 9 years old I had developed this crazy sweet tooth. Every time I got my allowance money I’d head straight to the shop in our area and drown myself in candy and cookies. I developed a few bad and painful cavities and had to go to the dentist. The dentist got into an argument with my father and threatened to call Child Protective Services. Because there’d been an investigation a few years before this following my little sister’s death this freaked my father out. He started angrily cursing how this was because of my sweet tooth and no more candy! And there would be no more allowance. Because I was scared too and my tooth had hurt so much I decided to quit sweets for a while.
A few years later I bought a candy bar (Snickers) for the first time. It tasted disgustingly, sickeningly sweet and I couldn’t even get through the whole thing. And my teeth seemed to ache just from biting into it. Since that point I don’t like any food that has been artifically sweetened. So I don’t eat candy, cookies, cake or any of that stuff. A traditional store bought birthday cake especially with icing of any variety I won’t even touch. I do like dark chocolate, over 70% cocoa at least, of the type that is more bitter than sweet.
Now I am a bit of a weird and gourmet food person. Yes I’ve eaten zee bugs though it’s not something that’s a regular habit. The ant larvae in the right season used to be harvested by my mother in law and is considered a delicacy here: kai mot daeng. She used to mix it with red peppers, cilantro, shallots, basil leaves and fish sauce and I really miss it. Cavier of all types is liked by me, but my favorite is salmon roe, which is in my top three all time favorite foods. If anybody ever makes a sandwich on my all time favorite sourdough bread comprised of hass avocado slices, camembert cheese and salmon roe it needs to be named after me. Spicy foods of all types are well liked by me and there is a beef larb loi I sometimes buy from the Thai markets.
That has me curious about the rest of you. What foods can’t or won’t you eat?
I thoroughly enjoyed your FUNNIES! Thank you, I needed that.
Lately? Nothing has sounded good. Every time I go to the store I ask “what do you want me to make for dinner?” Nobody knows. Nobody cares. We’ve been like this since about a year after Covid. We never had Covid. We can taste food. We get hungry. But I know I eat about half of what I used to. The desire to eat is gone. It’s so weird because it’s all 4 of us. Tomorrow or Saturday I’m going to make chili. I’ll probably wind up giving most of it to my adult kids.
