Occam might say the world is round because humans can travel in any direction, verify consistent changes in the background stars, and eventually return to their point of origin. If we get quantumly entangled beyond that, all bets are off.
I suspect most flat earthers belong in one of two categories. One is like 6th graders who combine and eat anything on the lunch tray—like spinach, Jello, and chocolate milk. They pretend it’s delicious and enjoy the notoriety. The other category wants to distract or fool us while they pick our pockets. I prefer the spinach/Jello/chocolate milk type. They’re amusing and inexpensive.
I was really trying to digest why this became “THE” issue to so many of them. Some of it is the BOT farms trying to inflame the religious angle: hence all of the vehement Bible verses posters who claim that if you believe the world is round that you are going to Hell. That does not seem like something that a loving God would do. Beyond that though, for me, a book which has been subject to mistranslation, misquotes, canonical texts added and subtracted and out of context twisting is not something that I then use as a definitive source.
That led me to begin reading the book refuting the Earth is flat 240 Bible verses prove it book. The author points to all of the hatred which was rained down on him, likely by intelligence assets. But he points out brilliantly that what the Bible seems to saying is that the Earth is a stationary sphere with the sun rotating around it and the other planets in ellipses around the sun. That model was just referred to by Isaac Middle in his comment as well. This one aligns best astrologically and could well be the castle keep that they are playing with flat Earth…
I’m convinced cats would have long since pushed everything off a flat earth. But yes, I think it’s fairly clear that the Bible indicates we’re on an orb, and I’m not surprised people furiously deny that. “Discredit the Bible and Make Fun of Christians” is an historically popular game, and straw-manning is a popular move. I’ve also heard it argued that Biblical provenance is superior to Shakespeare’s First Folio. I’m not so sure, but that’s an interesting rabbit trail to wander down.
Meanwhile, getting y’all back to the States… Maybe give your State Rep a shout?
I come at the flat earth idea from a practical perspective.
Growing up on the flat prairies of Western Kansas, our family always looked forward to trips to Colorado, the neighboring state to the west. That was back in the days when the air was still clean. As we came within sight of the Rockies, the tops of the mountains became visible first. As we drew closer, the view of the mountains became ever more pronounced - from the top down. This cannot happen on a flat earth.
When I got older I got into sailing. Watching other sail boats appear from over the horizon, the top of the mast always came into sight first, then the rest of the mast, then the body of the ship came into sight last. If the earth was flat, the entire ship should become visible all at once.
It was always glorious to hit the Rocky Mountains on I-70 Westbound before Denver. I know exactly the area and phenomena of which you are referring. I never was much of a sailor but living on the beach in various areas of the world for years I am aware of how ships appear as well...
Round, because when I look at space from my telescope, none of the heavenly bodies are flat. Also my Uncle worked at NASA as an engineer (Apollo and Gemini) and he told me the flat earth theory is bonkers.
I'm a Geocentrist, but I haven't seen a Flat Earth model that stands up under Astrology: the Luminaries function by following the Ecliptic in a rotation around the Earth, and this is provable based on seeing enough Natal Charts. But i've also seen enough legitimate experiments demonstrating that whatever curvature there might be is definitely not what Heliocentrism tells us.
Terry Pratchett may have gotten closest to the mark with Discworld.
I agree with your assessment completely. There are limitations to the globe view of the Earth and I think it is a gross simplification, a meme of sorts. But whether one believes in astrology or not astronomy has the most predictive models of any science far and away. We can map out the timing of solar eclipses thousands of years in the past and future, for instance. Somewhat obviously this would require base assumptions that are close to the mark.
I think the divisions between Heaven and Earth and the ground below are not necessarily as physical and solid as they have been made out to be. I tend to think of it as an ever expanding fractal.
Oh, interesting, Amy! I never understood Flat Earthers nor what they hoped to gain...except people posting online seemed eager to engage other posters and initiate some sort of "discussion" or "argument." I think I understand after reading the linked article.
The cat memes are so a propós and funny! I miss having cats...they were always the bomb. I also read, at one time, that Reptilians avoided cats or were scared of cats in some manner. I don't necessarily believe in Reptilians but found this idea extremely funny!! Who knows? More inane ideas are believed today.
The funnies bring joy and laughter in a world of non laughter on any given day. They also bring truths conveyed through comedy. The masters in the past knew how to convey the truths without demoralizing our spirits and make one see what in other ways cannot be seen.
I have been pondering the not rotating thing. Obviously flight trajectories would be calculated based on a rotating versus non rotating earth completely differently. One thing I always noticed though is that the flights west seem to follow the sun while the east ones have rapid days and nights. I'll have to ponder that
The most compelling argument is the calculation for the curvature of the earth being 25,000 miles
around. If you google it you can find how to calculate the curve for any distance and what you find
is you can see objects miles away that should be hundreds of feet below the horizon. The calculation is 8 inches per mile squared. Example: 10 miles 10 X 10 = 100 X 8 inches =800 inches divided by 12 = 66.6 feet.

Of course Earth is round, how else could we have a thick, chocolaty mantle and caramel nougat center, hmmm?
LOL of course! Where does all that volcanic lava come from?
When I first heard about "flat earth" the first thought I had was: CIA.......one of their experiments to test how gullible people are.
Another source of Truth Movement is: Agent 131711, he does deep dives on everything that we have been lied to about our entire lives.

Can anyone show my a picture of the Earth from space the is not a CGI image?
Probab;y not..but whethr we have gone to space or not is a different question

That said why does it actually matter?

Oceans cover about 70% of Earth's surface. None of the oceans are carbonated. So MOST of the Earth is flat, anyway.

I was always very skeptical of the Flat Earth until I looked into it and found overwhelming evidence
including military calculations for artillery and rockets that state in the Documents "based on a flat
non-rotating earth". I am a pilot and I know several International Airline Pilots and most say it is flat
not a globe. There are 2 legit sources if you are interested: Flat Earth Dave and flatearth101.com.

If the earth was flat cats would have knocked everything off by now!
LOL!
let's talk about the shape of the earth when we get rid of the gestapo bot https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/us/palantir-to-create-vast-federal-data-platform-tying-together-millions-of-americans-private-records-stock-jumps/articleshow/121521062.cms

One thing I found in the evidence was many of the International Flight Routes don't make sense on a Globe, but do on the Flat Earth.
