I am going to be of no help to you Amy. This 'Notes' thing makes no sense to me.... I made a 'note' and it disappeared into the ether. I have had no feedback from it at all and now I have no idea how to find it to check if there have been any responses..... Do I care? Not much. I am getting more jaded with social media every day..... I am wondering if that is the intention?
I saw your comment before it disappeared, but I agree with your sentiments. It's just another time eater. I prefer to be doing more constructive things like working in my garden or taking a hike in the wilderness.
that's funny ...... i thought i was the only one sending out that "message" . Social media is destroying the very thing those addicted to it are claiming they are trying to defend . FREEDOM ! Walk the Walk ...............
Indeed. "Walk the WalK" is kind of my mantra ( A commonly repeated word or phrase, especially in advocacy or for motivation ).
There are more than enough who talk the talk. "We should do this. We should do that . The world is like this because ......." . As a wise philosopher once said , and I paraphrase "Y'all need to get your own shit together first " ......
So, who is walking today? Who is swimming or on a bike ride ? Who is seeing nature without bringing their addictive smart phone along ? Who is planting a garden, or even a small plot of lettuce ? Who is trying to eat real food and eliminate some of the crap . Who is making an effort to see "reality" , instead of living with a library full of bias in their mind? Who is trying to just be a good person ? "Walk the Walk" . Start slowly :-) But keep going
There is no plan B with the Restrict the Internet Act. I have a web server at AmySukwan.com for example. I don't use it much because all it is is Russian Spam and I really need to clean up the site. But would that be a ting with a foreign agent? Would my actual presence in Thailand with American contacts be acting as a foreign agent somehow?
once that P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act extension passes I will be 100% done with social media or posting anything online except maybe on programmer/phone modder forums. I already cut back my sharing on Facebook to only leaving comments on other's posts after deleting about the last 5 years worth of my own posts. I don't Twit posts and will probably stop <3 ing other folks' Twits after that too.
I own a dot com, but haven't bothered to set it up yet, as it will eventually be related to tech and software that I develop or modify, and perhaps information/links/archives I've collected doing repairs on various things. Not motivated enough for that yet.
It's retroactive so I figure they are just going to have to come after me. That said social media is a shell of its former self. Once I realized how easily they could increase or decrease visibility on a given post I lost interest in it. I still have a lot of nice family photos though
Sadly, given the difficulties and the now relentless calls for censorship, it seems that Notes will be the demise of Substack. Too bad, too, since so many were able to find great writers who were able to say what they wanted to say, tell the truth, and help us avoid the mainstream lie factories. We'll miss this when it dies.
I have not used notes and don’t like how the notes notifications are all lumped together with comments and replies. I also have not published anything since Oct. 2022.
One of the reasons for that is a couple of times an unedited old draft got published instead of the polished version of my essay.
The new version of my post was deleted and it was a lot of work to go in and redo everything and try to remember what changes I made.
This happened back in Sept. 2023. and after that I have been gun shy to post again. I may post again soon anyway but I am concerned that this platform will turn into just another Facebook or Instagram, where its great at first but then devolves into a mess and that’s a feature, not an accident.
The Internet might have that quality as a feature, not a bug...or perhaps it's something in human nature? For what it's worth I've been enjoying your darker musings
"While telling the truth is sometimes hard, it is better than the alternative option. "
Here is a first ... presented by Pong Ninja on Amy Sukwan's thread . I honestly believe that I am the most positive person on these forums ! Not dark. Not pessimistic. And definitely Not willfully ignorant. Every single "alternative" blogger is posting the exact same news . Dark News ! Dark stories of who runs the world . Dark revelations of how the Dark State wants to control us all . And Dark realities of how that is happenning ; heads being bashed, tyranny everywhere, even our bodies being forced to comply . Are all these bloggers not Dark, because they end their blogs with a message of hope and faith ? Sorry... i choose the Truth. Since we are always dealing with IF , then I offer mine. " Gandhi said we must live the changes we want to see in the world." I never met the young fella..... but indeed he might just have something there. The more I see of that.... the lighter my musings shall be.
Regarding the phone app, (Android), a few months ago it became very glitchy; scrolling through comments, (I read nearly all of them!), it would pop up with the commenters' info at the slightest touch and wouldn't let me close the window. I'd have to go back, and lose my place in the comments. I finally uninstalled the app and use the nearly indistinguishable web version.
I've not attempted to use Notes yet; I work a full-time job and still spend a couple hours a day on SS. I want high-quality content, not high-quantity!
Not tech-related, but maybe helpful for writers; for similar reasons I watch very few videos. In the time it takes to watch a video, long or short, I can read several articles with many times more information. So a big thank you to all writers who distill videos down to the essentials!
Amy; I was shocked when you mentioned in passing that your husband had died; I had no idea! :-( hugs to you
It has doubled my notifications, even after I removed 'notes' notifications in my settings. It's redundant. I avoid all things twatty as well (no cell) and it seems like they are just chasing that market. Remember, the content we make is the product, and their ability to herd us around and then close the gate is a likely goal, all while sucking up our intelligence and bottling it to sell. They should be paying us.
Two days ago I got suspended "for up to 24 hours" for too many login attempts using a password. After the 24 hours elapsed I tried again and got, "We cannot log you in because...blah-blah..." So instead of using the password on my second attempt (today 15April2023) I opted for the email login and it worked. But now, there's this sense of uncertainty. I hope it's just substack growing pains. We'll see.
Precisely. Because of our electrical pains I tried to log in to substack from my husband's smart phone. I discovered I apparently don't have a password (I was sure I did) and that without that Gmail account so much for me
I dunno. One time could be an algo-glitch. But if it don't get fixed, then it ain't a glitch, is it? Back in 1995, I believed all the hype about what was possible in cyberspace and found out real quick most of it was just that: hype. Now the tech has advanced to where everything that was promised in '95 has come true but the big boss men don't want nobody to have "too much freedom of expression." I sincerely hope the substack guys ain't gettin' railroaded by the Five Eyes. Who would really be surprised if they were? Here's an old blues about the Big Boss Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd-o_kLONVI
It’s felt very sluggish recently. I don’t get the “Notes” feature tbh - all it does is create unnecessary noise (IMHO). People seem to be using it just because it’s there. Substack is - thankfully - not Twitter and neither should it try to be!
I’ve had some trouble hearing the audio and down loading the right post. I am not even remotely tech savvy, so I figure that is the reason for my difficulty, but it’s interesting to know that others have problems too.
I don't browse the Notes (not a fan of the Tweeter/Facebook format,) and all my Substack notifications are in the form of new emails.
Substack (and most other) emails are all sorted into subfolders, by author/sender, using filters. this avoids the sent to spam issue I read about some people having too and I can easily see when there are unread articles/replies/likes out in the subfolder titles area.
I rarely navigate the substack site itself at all. I just read articles that don't fit into emails, leave "<3" on many articles I read whether email or on the 'stack, visit new-to-me authors from links in other articles, and sometimes leave the <3 when I read comments.
I’m about ready to delete the app and just read on my email or substack.com. It is soooo slow to do anything. I tried to find a way to communicate with them…? I’m just trying to read the posts.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I know it wasn’t this bad a year or two ago!

Your unhelpful response is very helpful. I'm finding a system that is so difficult to navigate that I am sadly suspecting a design to failure
I just had another thought....
What if Substack is considered such a threat that certain high ranking Techno-nobs have sent in a few infiltrators to fuck it up?
I will make a 'Note' of that and see how it fares..... brb
Amen and best with it! I know criticism of your own is a recipe for peril but on the other side if it can't be criticized is it really that great?
I've had that same thought!
I saw your comment before it disappeared, but I agree with your sentiments. It's just another time eater. I prefer to be doing more constructive things like working in my garden or taking a hike in the wilderness.

Walking is good:)
I like walking. And meditation 😉
Indeed. "Walk the WalK" is kind of my mantra ( A commonly repeated word or phrase, especially in advocacy or for motivation ).

Seems Substack has caught the "new and improved" virus.
It all goes to shit and yet we call it "progress."
working hypothesis: substackers are being pathogenically primed for when twitter buys it.
at which point i'm outtie.
we need a plan b.

good point. in the purely diasporic land that we call freedom, everyone's a foreign agent.
maybe you write under a nom de plume? is the machine smart enough to figure that out?
seriously - i would hate to lose the chance to read you. you're an inspiration.
Thank you and I'll be on here as long as I can be!

Hopefully it doesn't soon. But I am looking at the problems with a critical eye.
Substack is honest.
Therefore it MUST be destroyed by any and all means.
My concerns exactly

hmmmmmm I do believe I have a list of things like that . :-)

Yep my first husband died and yeah I don't watch many videos which are not music
I "liked" your comment but to be clear...there is nothing to "like" when a loved one dies.
Truth!

I am not remotely tech savvy either but these difficulties seem more extreme than usual. Or am I just stupid?
